The Eye

Describe the structure and function of the parts of the human eye; i.e., the cornea, lens,
sclera, choroid, retina, rods and cones, fovea centralis, pupil, iris and optic nerve

Structures of the Eye - Your Assignment

You need to draw the eye including the following parts:  sclera, cornea, choroid layer, Iris, retina, rods, cones, fovea centralis, blind spot, lens, cililary muscles, aqueous humor, vitreous humor, optic chiasma.

You need to include all functions on your diagram.

Upon completion of this assignment, you should be able to label a blank diagram of the eye and state the function of each part.

I have included some resources below to help you.

Assignment
Read pages 449 - 455 and complete the following questions.
  • page 451 #1-2
  • page 455 #1-8
Following is a really good site that helps you remember the function of the eye using flash cards.
Flash cards

HOW DOES THE EYE WORK?
  • Trace the path of light through the eye.  Name all the parts that it has to travel through.
                    - what part of the brain does the information get relayed to?
                    -  what nerve gets it there?

  • Describe the stimulation of rods and cones

  • State and describe the four processes important for image formation on the retina
                   1)  refraction of light rays
                   2)  accomodation of lens (near objects; far objects)
                   3)  constriction of pupil
                   4)  3-D image and inverted image

  • Why do we see in 3-D?

  • Describe how each functions to protect the eye.
                   -  bone
                   -  eyebrow
                   - eyelashes
                   - blinking
                   - lacrimal gland
                   - tarsal gland
                   - lids
                   - sclera

  • Once you have completed the above, you should know the following terms:  refraction, convex, concave, convergence, optic chiasma, visual cortex

  • Research each of the following disorders of the eye.  Describe the disorder.  How can it be treated or managed?
          Glaucoma
          Cataract
          Astigmatism
          Myopia
          Hypermetropia
